Belgium 2006: Although probably more associated with neighbouring Netherlands, Belgium has hundreds of historic windmills dotted around the country. Standing next to the Damse Vaart near Damme, Schellemolen windmill dates back to 1876. The windmill was in use for almost 100 years until it closed in 1963. In 1971, it was purchased by West Flanders province and fully restored in the mid-seventies. Today, the windmill is a protected monument and open to visitors daily.<back to Portfolio>
